Honorable Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez,
The Town of Cutler Bay is acutely aware of the implications that the emergence of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has on global public health. Following recent announcements from Federal, State and Local Legislation regarding the evolving situation of the pandemic, the Town is taking a variety of actions to contribute to the worldwide efforts to slow down the spread of the virus.
On March 16, 2020, President Trump acknowledged the gravity of the COVID-19 pandemic, releasing strict new guidelines to limit people’s interactions, including that Americans should avoid groups of more than 10 people. The virus that causes COVID-19 is easily transmitted through person to person contact, especially in group settings. It is essential that the spread of the virus be slowed to protect the ability of public and private health care providers to handle the influx of new patients and safeguard public health and safety.
It is my opinion that the issuance of an Emergency Order to shelter in place throughout Miami-Dade County, the most populous County in Florida, is our best chance to flatten the curve and save as many lives as possible. Due to the risk of the rapid spread of the virus, and the need to protect the most vulnerable members of the community, this Order will assist in securing that all individuals anywhere in Miami-Dade County are to shelter in place—that is, stay at home—except for certain essential activities and work, for those who provide essential services.
I strongly encourage you to take this significant action to save lives and preserve Miami-Dade County’s economy for our shared future. I recognize the difficult choices you have made in this public health crisis, and I will whole-heartedly stand by you should you make this difficult decision.
