Use, Sale or Distribution of Plastic Straws Prohibited

Did you know that the use, sale or distribution of plastic straws in commercial establishments, mobile vendors, by special event permittees, and on Town facilities/property was prohibited in Cutler Bay last year?

According to Ocean Conservancy, plastic straws are in the top 10 trash items collected during coastal cleanups. It’s estimated that 500 million straws are used every day in our country—and many of those end up in our oceans, polluting the water and killing marine life.

Although there is still much more work to be done to reduce the global problem of plastic pollution, we must start somewhere. We encourage your support to reduce plastic consumption wherever you can.

Effective January 1, 2020, Code Compliance will begin enforcing this ordinance with written warning notices. Beginning March 1, 2020, Code Compliance will enforce civil penalties for violations. Distributing, selling or using plastic straws may result in a civil penalty of $25.

The prohibition of plastic straws will not apply to pre-packaged drinks sold at commercial establishments; at medical and dental facilities; in school district, county, state or federal governmental entities; and where a reasonable accommodation is needed by an individual due to a medical or physical condition.
