CUTLER BAY, FL—Congresswoman Donna Shalala, who was recently elected for Florida’s 27th Congressional District in last year’s Midterm Elections, held her first-ever Town Hall Meeting on Tuesday, February 19, in the Town of Cutler Bay’s Town Hall Council Chambers.

The meeting, which was open to the public and organized by Rep. Shalala and her staff, gave an opportunity to her constituents to meet and speak directly with her regarding many important issues and current events. Some of the many topics covered included firearms regulation, health care, traffic and transit improvements, and plastic pollution.

After concluding the meeting, Rep. Shalala presented Town Mayor Tim Meerbott, Vice Mayor Sue Ellen Loyzelle, Council Member BJ Duncan, Council Member Roger Coriat and members of the Town’s Communities For A Lifetime Committee with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition for the Age-Friendly Action Plan the Town has adopted. Cutler Bay is currently one of only two municipalities in Florida that have an AARP Age-Friendly Action Plan. Also in attendance was former Town Mayor Peggy Bell.

Just an hour prior to the Town Hall Meeting, Rep. Shalala and Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, of Florida’s 26th Congressional District, met with several local elected officials and representatives from Miami-Dade County’s Public Works and Transit Departments in Cutler Bay’s Town Hall Community Room to discuss Miami-Dade County’s SMART South Corridor Transitway. The elected officials in attendance included Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott, Pinecrest Vice Mayor Anna Hochkammer and City of Florida City Mayor Otis Wallace.

“We are honored to have hosted Rep. Shalala’s first Town Hall Meeting,” stated Town Manager Rafael Casals. “As an added benefit, our local South Miami-Dade Mayors had the opportunity to meet with her and express the urgent need for transportation solutions along the South Corridor Transitway.”

Taking office just over a month before her 78th birthday, Rep. Shalala is the second oldest Congressional freshman in U.S. history. Some of her many professional highlights include serving as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 2001 and serving as the president of the University of Miami from 2001 through 2015.

Florida’s 27th Congressional District contains a large part of the City of Miami, as well as the municipalities of Miami Beach, North Bay Village, Key Biscayne, Coral Gables, West Miami, South Miami, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and Cutler Bay.
