CUTLER BAY, FL—The Town of Cutler Bay celebrated its Tenth Annual Chili Day Cook-Off on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Cutler Ridge Park. The Cook-Off, which is one of the Town’s largest events and takes place in January every year, brought in over 3,000 residents and neighbors, a record-breaking number for this event. This year saw 24 teams, including three firehouse teams, compete to make the best chili, salsa and cornbread.

Competitors arrived at the park as early as 8 a.m. Saturday morning to begin prepping and cooking. In addition to earning bragging rights, the teams competed for cash prizes and trophies in the following five categories: Chili, Salsa, Cornbread, People’s Choice and Best Decorated Booth. For the two People’s Choice categories, event attendees were invited to sample chili and salsa and vote for their favorite team by dropping a token in their bucket.

While the People’s Choice votes were being cast outside by attendees, inside the recreation building was where the private judging took place. A total of five judges scored each sample based on the following criteria: aroma, color, consistency, taste and aftertaste.

“This is the tenth year that the Town has been hosting and organizing Chili Day, which has become a signature Town event our residents and neighbors—along with their dogs—look forward to attending,” expressed Mayor Tim Meerbott. “This event highlights the sense of family and community our Town has, which is one of the many reasons Cutler Bay is an excellent place to live.”

After the judging was completed and votes were tallied up, the competition’s winners were announced on stage by Mayor Tim Meerbott and Council Member BJ Duncan, who presented each winner with their trophy and posed for photos. Prior to announcing the winners, Florida Representative Kionne L. McGhee stepped on stage to greet the crowd. Also in attendance was Vice Mayor Sue Ellen Loyzelle, who greeted and mingled with residents and friends. The winners for each category are as follows:

  • 1st Place – Sunseekers

Cutler Bay’s favorite local band ‘Cutler Stew’ rocked the day away while being powered by Cutler Bay Solar Solutions.

Chili Day proved to be a very successful event thanks to the event’s sponsors: Mercedes-Benz of Cutler Bay, Southland Mall and TD Bank.
