Open Letter from Mayor Bell
Don't Forget to Vote!
November 5, 2018
After tomorrow’s election, we will have a new Mayor and possibly two new Council Members. Before my term as Mayor ends, I must take this opportunity to express my gratitude to you for trusting me to represent you on the Town Council. It has been a great honor and pleasure to serve you. I used my term in office to represent you to the very best of my ability—providing fiscal responsibility and using a common-sense approach in drafting Town laws.
On October 24, 2018, we hosted the 2018 State of the Town Address—if you were unable to attend, you may find the State of the Town Address Video by clicking here. I shared my journey into public service with residents and guests. My journey began in the late 1990s, working for grassroots issues to create a municipality and, ultimately, to serve you for two terms as Council Member (2006-2014) and, most recently in my last term, as your Mayor (2014-2018).
We’ve grown and prospered in these past 13 years since Cutler Bay was born. Our property values have increased, and we are attracting families that are looking for a small-Town feel and easy access to Miami-Dade County’s many attractions. Our police force has grown to 55 full-time sworn officers. Cutler Bay’s Officers build positive relationships with residents and respond more quickly to calls from residents, all while keeping consistently low crime rates. Our award-winning Caribbean Boulevard and Old Cutler Road projects helped push Cutler Bay into the forefront of the Complete Streets approach to creating safer roadways for all users. We continue to operate in a manner that is cost-effective with a healthy fiscal reserve of over $18 Million and only 33 full-time employees; only one more position than we began with in 2005. These are just a few of our many accomplishments, which you may find more information on by clicking here.
When I first ran for office, I promised my husband, Marty, that it would only be for two years. We have lived in Cutler Bay for 34 years, and our son, Jamie, spent his entire life here. Like you, I wanted my home and community to be the very best place to live! I am grateful for the love and support that I received from my family as those two years turned into 13!
Now, as we turn our focus to tomorrow’s election, I ask that you join me in exercising your right to vote! I am proud to say, just as I have never missed a vote on the Town Council, I have never missed the opportunity to vote in an election. Participating in the electoral process is a family tradition in my household. I will always treasure the picture that Jamie sent me of him filling out his ballot for the last time in 2016. He knew what a privilege voting is and how important our voices are in making our Town, State, and Country the very best it can be.
Although there have been many late nights working tirelessly to better the Town, it has been my greatest honor and privilege to serve you, my fellow residents. I know I am leaving you in good hands with the very best staff, police and Council. As your deeply grateful Mayor, I ask one favor:
PLEASE VOTE TOMORROW.
