Press Release: Recognizing Elderly Abuse Workshop at Marilyn Hope's Place

The National Council on Aging reports that approximately 1 in 10 Americans aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse, with other estimates ranging as high as 5 million elders abused each year. In an effort raise the awareness of elder abuse, Town staff worked with the Miami Dade Police Department Special Victims Bureau to host a workshop geared towards recognizing the signs and symptoms of elder abuse.

The workshop titled “Recognizing Elder Abuse” was held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Marilyn Hope’s Place, right here in Cutler Bay. Detective Michael Zambrana, Miami-Dade Police Department educated the audience on current fraudulent trends affecting older adults throughout the community. Issues of elder abuse stemming from caretakers was a hot topic at the workshop. Detective Zambrana explained how caretakers sometimes mistreat their patients due to a lack of patience or understanding. He provided everyone in attendance with a phone number to call if one ever thinks they are experiencing elder abuse of any sort.
